Past Programmes
The first cohort ran in Karachi in 2012, built on a survey of street cobblers carried out that July. Since then the programme has been taught across Pakistan, Yemen, Egypt, Türkiye, Jordan and Angola, and rebuilt several times on what the cohorts taught us.
Thirteen years
How the work got here
The street cobblers
A forty-five page survey of cobblers working the pavements of Karachi, published that July, asking what actually held their trade back. The first Business Growth Workshop ran in November.
The programme proper
Cohort after cohort through the year, each one logged as it happened. The Business Growth Manual reached its fourth edition and the format settled into consecutive short days rather than a single long one.
Beyond Karachi
Haripur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, then seven communities and 1,498 individuals reached. Alumni businesses were tracked rather than counted once and forgotten.
Taking stock
Empathy mapping moved out of the classroom and onto the street in Hijrat Colony. A four-year retrospective, published February 2017, set out what had worked and what had not.
Yemen

A second programme
Numu takes the same method to young people rather than traders: Izmir, Amman, Baqa’a refugee camp and Luanda. The coaching commitment shortened from six months to three.
